Graduate Data Scientist - Glasgow

About us

DeepMatter is a digital company focused on developing combined chemistry, hardware and software solutions leading to chemistry's ultimate digitisation; think “Big Data Meets Chemistry”.

As a young, vibrant, high-growth technology company, released from academia, we are expanding our development team based in Glasgow with keen, energetic, talented, engineers, scientists and technologists who share our passion and vision.

We are expanding our Data Science team with 2 Graduate Data Scientists, for a June start. We offer candidates the ability to develop models which can truly revolutionise an industry, enabling them to have a lasting impact on chemistry in the digital age.

The role

We are looking for enthusiastic graduate data scientists/analysts to join us in developing industry-disrupting algorithms for use in our DigitalGlassware platform.

As a graduate data scientist, you will have a good understanding of your field, and are expected to continue to develop your skillset through research, application and reading, and bring this knowledge to the company.

We are a close-knit company, and cross-departmental collaboration is common, meaning you will build a knowledge of the wider business and associated technologies out with the Data Science team. Internally, Data Science is an open-minded team, where your input and ideas are not only welcome but expected and encouraged.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ingest data taken from our proprietary in-beaker hardware devices and developing models which will have tangible benefits to chemists

  • Prepare data, develop models on it and then robustly evaluate the outcomes before deployment, with continuous refinement once it is in user’s hands.

  • High-level modelling of chemical reactions and developing an understanding of what makes some reactions succeed and some fail.

Key Skills & Experience (required)

  • 1:1 or 2:1 in Computing or Engineering related discipline

  • Excellent, demonstrable understanding of AI, machine learning and statistics

  • Strong Python skills (pandas, numpy, sklearn, Jupyter notebooks etc.)

  • A general capability to work with data of all forms (textual, tabular, SQL, NoSQL, JSON etc.)

  • An ability to determine which algorithms and techniques are appropriate for a given problem (not every problem requires a deep neural net!)

  • Able to work with and clean real-world datasets which may contain noisy signals

  • Knowledge of time-series processing, in a multivariate context

  • Good communication skills and ability to work with other teams to achieve tangible outcomes

Skills & Experience (desired)

  • Java or similar, and the associated build-deploy lifecycle

  • Exposure to computer vision and audio processing techniques (Fourier transforms, wavelets etc.)

  • Knowledge of deep learning is useful but not required (CNNs, GANs, LSTMs)

  • Git or other version control software

  • Use of Linux and Google Cloud Platform

  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and associated concepts

Salary & Benefits

Competitive salary
